Dr. Murat Akova graduated from İstanbul University faculty of Medicine in 1982. He had training of specialization in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases in 1984-1988. During 1988-1999 he studied in “The London Hospital Medical College Department of Medical Microbiology” and obtained clinical microbiology diploma. |
In 1992-1993 he worked in “Tufts University Center for Adaptive Resistance and Microbiology”. In 1990 he was an assistant professor of Department of Internal Diseases, in 1991 he became associate professor and in 1998 he became professor. Currently he is giving lectures in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases Unit of Infection Diseases. He has been Deputy Dean of Faculty of medicine since 2000. Additionally he is a professor in Department of Medical Education and Informatics and Chairman of Department of Medical Informatics in Institute of Informatics.
Dr Akova was a member of Executive Board of TUBITAK Medical Sciences Research Group in 1999-2004, and he is currently representative of TUBITAK-Turkey in executive board of European Science Foundation Europe Medical research Councils and representative of Mediterranean Countries in executive board of the same foundation. Since July 2002 he is representative member for Turkish Association of Medical Doctors in Ministry of Health Central Ethical Board.
Dr. Akova has received the Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Internal Diseases Prof Dr M. Şeref Zileli Prize (1987) and TUBITAK Scientific Incitement Prize (1997). Additionally he received British Council Research Scholarship (Chevening) during the period he was in England in 1989.
Dr. Akova refereed for many domestic and international journals and his primary research interest is “antibiotic resistance mechanisms” and “infections in cancer victims”. Dr Akova was a founding member of “Turkish Febrile Neutropenia Group” and he was researcher or coordinator of this group’s national and international research activities. Additionally he is a member of executive board of infection group in the structure of European Organization for Research in Cancer (EORTC) and he is actively participating in this group’s international activities.
