Prof.Dr.Hamdi Akan

Ankara University Medical Faculty, Hematology Department

He graduated from TED Ankara College in 1974 and from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1980. In 1985 he became specialist in internal diseases. In 1988 (Following fulfillment of conscription and obligatory service) he started in Hematology Sub-field Specialization in Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. He became Associate Professor of Internal Diseases in 1990 and Professor of Internal Diseases and Hematology in 1996.

In 2001 he was a founding professor in Ankara University Department of Medical Education and Informatics. In the new education system program he initiated in Ankara Faculty of Medicine in 2001, he was responsible for “evidence-based medicine and critical thinking” program.

His primary research interest in Hematology is hemato-oncological malignities and infections in patients with immune system disorder. Dr Akan was a founding member of “Turkish Febrile Neutropenia Group” and he was researcher or coordinator of this group’s national international research activities.

Dr. Hamdi Akan was Chairman of Department of Hematology in 200-2003 and he had important role in formation of Clinical Research in this discipline. Having 61 international publications registered in Index Medicus, mainly focused on infections in febrile neutropenic patients, Dr. Hamdi Akan worked in a private Clinical Research Company for some time.

Dr. Hamdi Akan was a member of European Bone Marrow Transplantation Committee and EORTC Infection Diseases Subcommittees, member of Turkish Hematology Association Infection Diseases Subcommittee and editor of Turkish Journal of Hematology.

Personal hobbies of Dr. Hamdi Akan are coffee, cinema and jazz music.
